High School Quantum Computing Course
Teaching quantum computing to public high schoolers across the nation.
Overview
Can a cat be dead and alive?
That's the kind of question at the heart of our free, introductory course on quantum computing for high schoolers. No prior background beyond high school algebra is required — by the end, students understand how quantum computers work, write their own quantum programs, and see how quantum computing applies to the real world.

How the course runs
The course is taught live and virtually by Stanford students. In its most recent run, that meant nine weekly classes over two months, taught by three instructors in separate sections to about 75 students.
- Linear algebra and quantum mechanics fundamentals
- Qubits and quantum gates
- Programming on real quantum computers with Qiskit
- Real-world applications, including the BB84 quantum cryptography protocol
- Optional homework and instructor office hours
- A culminating project
